Imagine being able to speak Japanese at the sushi bar…

You’re sitting at your favorite sushi bar with your friends.
The chef asks what you want in English.
You respond naturally in Japanese.
He looks surprised. Smiles. He answers back. You understand him. You respond. And he goes back to work. Your friends look at you, shocked and delighted.
Knowing the basics of Japanese unlocks a world of experiences you can’t have any other way.
And this isn’t a distant dream.
It’s not years away.
You are literally just 90 minutes away from being able to do this.
You can quickly learn the basics in less time than it takes to watch your favorite show

Duolingo & Apps
200-day streaks. Lots of tapping. But you still can't put together a real sentence. Apps keep you engaged without actually teaching you how to think, listen, and speak.
What you actually need is what every kid who grows up speaking fluent Japanese gets: someone who explains it to you, simply, in a way that makes sense, in small enough pieces that your brain has time to catch up. Someone who can switch between English and Japanese to make the why land, then model exactly how it sounds.
That's what I does. And that's why learning Japanese from me works better than anything else you've tried before.

Textbooks Like Genki
Walls of grammar on the first ten pages. They assume you'll figure it out. You never do. They weren't designed for someone learning alone.
.png)
Scattered YouTube Videos
If you could piece Japanese together from random videos, you already would have. What you need is a structured path, not a playlist.
The fastest way to become fluent is by learning the same way that kids do…
Every kid who grows up speaking fluent Japanese does it with a real person who really cares about their progress, giving them simple, bite-sized lessons that stack on top of each other like building blocks.
Kids learn best when it’s fun, and they don’t have to try too hard.
They remember all the words, phrases, and concepts effortlessly through the right repetition and exercises.
And they learn fast without feeling overwhelmed because the lessons are never that long.
This is how you make Japanese “stick” in your mind long after the lessons are over.
And guess what?
The same style of teaching that works for kids is what works for adults, too.
That's why learning Japanese from me works better than anything else you’ve tried before.
I'm a native Japanese speaker.
I grew up bouncing between Japan and the U.S., losing one language, relearning the other, then doing it all over again. Trust me when I say, I understand the struggle of learning a language!
Using my personal experience of learning Japanese, I've raised my two kids to speak fluent English and Japanese.
I started teaching Japanese for free on TikTok in 2021 and have since grown to 1.4 million followers. Over the years, I’ve received countless messages from people saying:
-
"I wish I'd had a teacher like you when I was learning."
-
"Can you explain that grammar thing one more time?"
-
"Where can I take a real course from you?"
While my content on TikTok (and Instagram and YouTube) is fun and educational, it doesn’t teach you step-by-step how to speak Japanese.
So I built an app and course that does.
Hi, I'm Jenny, the creator of Kojo Beginners Japanese

NATIVE JAPANESE SPEAKER ✦ LIVED IN JAPAN ✦ BILINGUAL

Kojo Beginner Japanese gives you the basics of conversational Japanese and makes it “stick” in your brain so you can use it every day like a fluent speaker
I will teach you the same way I taught my own kids, using short, simple, clear lessons that you can actually remember. Plus, I model how to use Japanese in everyday situations.
I start from the basics, as if you’ve never learned Japanese before, and bring you all the way up to being able to hold simple natural conversations with fluent speakers.
By the end of Kojo Beginner Japanese, you’ll be able to:

Introduce yourself, say where you're from, and have a friendly first exchange with any Japanese speaker

Talk about your family, your daily routine, what you did today, and what you're doing tomorrow

Order food and drinks, say what you like, ask what something is, and talk about a real meal in Japan

Ask sharp questions, inquire about the who, what, when, where, why, and how of anything, and actually understand the answers

Build your own Japanese sentences from scratch, instead of memorizing other people's

Hold a real, simple conversation in Japanese with a native speaker
And the best part?
There are only 6 lessons.
And it will take you less than 60 minutes to complete.
The lessons are short, fast, and built so the stuff sticks.
You’ll start speaking immediately, and by the end, will have everything you need to hold real conversations in Japanese.

No AI voices
Kojo has no AI voices or chatbots. Just me, Jenny, speaking like a friend teaching you. I grew up with this language and can share insights apps and non-native teachers can't.
.png)
I explain the why, not just the what
Most resources tell you what to say. I'll explain why Japanese is built this way. Once you understand its structure, you start building your own phrases.
.png)
Short & simple
Each lesson has short videos under ten minutes. Watch during lunch, on the train, or before bed. No filler or long lectures—just clear, simple teaching that respects your time.
.png)
You learn by doing, not just watching
I talk to you, expecting you to respond. I pause and wait. You try, repeat after me, write characters, and record your voice. This isn't a background podcast; you're in the lesson with me.

Fun game layer
The course is a game-like app with lessons as missions. You unlock map sections, collect kobans with tips, and track progress. It makes learning fun and fast.

Real conversational Japanese
I teach the real Japanese people speak, not the stiff textbook kind. I'm one of them and hear it daily. It genuinely makes Tokyo servers smile when you use their words.
What makes Kojo Beginner Japanese different with other
Here’s EXACTLY What's inside Kojo Beginner Japanese
Lesson 1
The Basics
Greetings, numbers, days of the week, and the tiny word desu that turns your sentences into real, polite, complete Japanese. By the end of this lesson, you can confidently say hello, count, make plans, and sound like you actually know what you're doing.
Lesson 2
Identity
How to introduce yourself, say where you're from, and talk about who you are. You'll meet personal pronouns and the wa particle, the single most important grammar tool in Japanese. By the end of this lesson, you can walk up to any Japanese speaker and start a real conversation about who you both are.
Lesson 3
Describe People
You'll learn how to talk about your family, describe what people are like (smart, funny, kind, not so smart), and say who's around and who isn't. You'll add the ga particle to your toolkit. By the end, you can tell someone all about the people in your life, and ask about theirs.
Lesson 4
Flavor Mode
This is a super fun one. You'll learn food and drink vocabulary, how to talk about what you love, what you hate, what's sweet, what's spicy, and what's meh. You'll also learn how to flip statements into questions and how to say what something isn't. By the end of this lesson, you can walk into a Japanese restaurant and have a real exchange about the menu.
Lesson 5
Your daily routine. Wake up, get ready, go to work, come home, eat dinner, go to bed. You'll learn the verbs that power your day, time words for talking about yesterday /today/tomorrow, and the wo and ni particles that let you say what you're doing and where you're going. By the end, you can tell someone what your whole day looked like.
Identity
Lesson 6
Ask and Tell
The conversation lesson. You'll learn the five W's and one H (who, what, when, where, why, how), plus pointing words (this, that, the one over there) and the no and to particles that let you connect ideas. By the end of this lesson, you can hold a real, two-way conversation in Japanese.
Here’s how you learn by doing, not just watching.
How it works

Watch
Each lesson is a short video where I walk you through the concept, explain it in plain English, and model the Japanese exactly the way it's spoken. Slow, clear, friendly. No rushing.
Repeat after me
.png)
I pause. You say it out loud. You have to make the sounds with your own mouth to learn the language.
Practice writing
.png)
You'll trace and write real Japanese characters. There's something about writing by hand that locks things into your brain in a way that watching never will.
.png)
Quiz time
Short, fun quizzes after each section that prove you learned it. You can record your own voice and compare it to mine.
.png)
Move through the map
Each lesson is a mission. You unlock the next as you go, collecting kobans with cultural tidbits about real life in Japan while watching your progress fill in across the map.

FAQs about Kojo Beginner Japanese
What if I'm not "good at languages"?
Nobody is "bad at languages." That's a story you've been told (or told yourself) because the tools you've used were bad. Real Japanese kids learn this language without studying a single grammar chart. They learn it because someone explains things to them simply, in small pieces, with patience. That's what I do. If you can learn the words to a song, you can learn this.
Is six lessons really enough?
By the time you finish lesson six, you can introduce yourself, talk about your daily life, order food, ask for directions, and have real two-way conversations with a Japanese speaker. That's a full conversational foundation. Everything else in Japanese builds on these basics.
How long does each lesson take?
Each lesson is broken into short segments, most under ten minutes. You can finish a whole lesson in one sitting if you want, or spread it across a few days. It's built to fit into the gaps in your schedule.
Will this work on my phone?
Yes. Kojo is built for mobile. Web-based, nothing to download. Open it in your browser, on your phone, your tablet, or your laptop. Wherever you are.
I've tried so many things and nothing has stuck. Will this be different?
Probably, yeah.
Most apps and books teach you what to say without teaching you why or how the language works the way it does. So you memorize a phrase, forget it a week later, feel bad about yourself, and quit. I teach the structure first, in plain English, with a real human voice. Once the how clicks, the what sticks. And the lessons are short and fun enough that you actually want to keep going.
I already know a few basics. Is this too easy?
This starts at zero, so the very first lesson will feel familiar if you already know hiragana. But here's what I see all the time: people who "know the basics" actually have gaps. They memorized things without understanding them. If that's you, going through these lessons will fill in holes you didn't know you had and make all the pieces finally fit together.
How is this different from Duolingo?
Duolingo is great at making you feel like you're making progress. It's not great at actually teaching you Japanese. I explain why sentences are built the way they are, why you'd say one thing to a friend and a totally different thing to your boss, why textbook phrases sound weird to real Japanese people. Plus I'm a real human, not an AI voice, which makes all the difference in learning how to properly pronounce words the way real humans do.
What if I have questions while I'm learning?
Email me. Seriously. I read everything. I'm not a chatbot. I'm just Jenny.
You really can't find your style of 'bilingual kindergarten teacher reading to you' content anywhere else and it's so helpful.
Tyler
Jenny explains terms and stuff only native speakers know. She explains them from the inside.
Celina
She can explain things to me in English so I understand, but then switch to Japanese and model the correct pronunciation. It's so helpful.
Lindsey
教えてくれてありがとうございます.
That's "thank you for teaching me" in Japanese. She wrote that after taking the course.
Chelsea
I love how she breaks down what she's teaching in a way that I feel like a kid would learn. For newcomers like me, that's really important.
Jessica
She makes learning super fun. It's interactive, and she's an awesome teacher.
Lorivette
As someone with ADHD, these videos are super ADHD-friendly. The quick explanations without long-winded wording helps me a lot.
